  • May 9 2022: REPORT: Educating Future-Ready Students| CASEL, CCD, CIVIC - Civic, the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) and the Coalition for Career Development (CCD) Center released a new report featuring a state policy roadmap for K-12 education that prepares students to succeed in a rapidly changing world. "Americans look to the education system to equip young people to succeed in this environment, but traditional approaches have often fallen short with the rapidly changing future of work.   • December 9, 2021: Today, COVID Collaborative launched the report Hidden Pain: Children Who Lost a Parent or Caregiver to COVID-19 and What the Nation Can Do to Help Them. Of the more than 760,000 Americans who have died from COVID-19 as of November 17, 2021, there are 167,000 children under 18 who have lost a parent or other in-home caregiver, with the greatest impact on communities of color and children 13 and younger who are the most dependent.

  • September 14, 2021 — Welcome.Us launched to support the thousands of Afghan refugees coming to America who need clothing, food, and shelter. The movement is co-chaired by Cecilia Muñoz and John Bridgeland, former Directors of the White House Domestic Policy Council under Presidents Obama and Bush, respectively.   • June 16, 2021 — New research briefs by Civic, supported by Lumina Foundation, explore the added challenges and barriers immigrant, English Learner, and American Indian and Alaska Native students experience in education. These populations typically face higher levels of student need, as they are more often low-income and are more likely to have multiple adverse childhood experiences. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized existing barriers, such as the digital divide and language skills.

  • June 3, 2021 — "A multiyear initiative from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and The WNET Group aims to help students explore and prepare for high-demand careers, including the 30 million open middle-skill jobs that require a one-year occupational certificate or two-year associate degree."   • March 30, 2021 — For the second year in a row, the U.S. Department of Education did not release a national graduation rate for students experiencing homelessness due to missing data from one state. Cohort counts from 49 states and the District of Columbia, however, show a national graduation rate of 67.7 percent, up slightly from 67.5 percent in 2018. Read more.

  • March 23, 2021 — The U.S. Department of Education released data showing the high school graduation rate for the class of 2019 has reached a record high of 85.8%. These new figures show an increase from the previous year’s rate of 85.3% and indicate continued progress toward equity across the country, as rates for students from historically disadvantaged communities increased by more than the national average.   • March 19, 2021 — "Reluctance among conservatives to get vaccinated against Covid-19 has caused growing concern inside the White House, according to people familiar with the matter...Bridgeland said [The COVID Collaborative] has helped the White House with a key part of its outreach to conservatives: arming trusted local leaders -- including doctors, religious leaders and others -- with the facts about the safety and efficacy of vaccines."   • March 17, 2021 — White people in Louisiana’s parishes that voted most heavily Republican in 2020 are getting vaccinated at lower rates than the rest of the state, a WWNO/WRKF analysis finds, reinforcing concerns that some public health officials are voicing over vaccine hesitancy among people who identify as conservative. “[That correlation] is almost twice as large as if you were Black, Republican, Democrat, Hispanic, or even have an underlying health condition,” said John Bridgeland, founder of the Covid Collective, a group working to reduce vaccine hesitancy. “So, it’s a group that is clearly very hesitant.” Read here.

  • March 17, 2021 — Nearly half of Trump voters say they don't plan to get vaccinated for COVID-19. The race is on to find pro-vaccine messaging that connects with vaccine-skeptical white Republicans. "We found - and the White House is very aware - that the largest correlation to vaccine hesitancy is actually being a conservative," said John Bridgeland. Listen here.

  • March 15, 2021 — As President Biden pushes to vaccinate as many Americans as possible, he faces deep skepticism among many Republicans, a group especially challenging for him to persuade. The administration is seeking help in urging Republicans to get inoculated. But the president said he was not sure how much value there was in enlisting his predecessor. Read here.

  • November 16, 2020 — In "There is no more important step in Biden's first 100 days than this" by Stephen Heintz, President and CEO of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, argues that the most important thing for President-Elect Biden to do is to establish a White House Office for Democracy to launch a series of overdue reforms. He cites John Bridgeland's direct access to President George W. Bush when creating the USA Freedom Corps to highlight the importance of the appointed staff to manage the office by bringing "deep relationships with the nonprofit sector and state legislatures."   • August 21, 2020 — The COVID Collaborative, a project of UNITE, released a national poll by Hart Research Associates showing that mask mandates are extremely effective in getting Americans to wear face coverings when they might not do so on their own. The COVID Collaborative is a platform for bringing experts in health, education, and the economy together with state and local leaders to navigate the COVID-19 crisis.   • October 15, 2019 - If we’re going to create new jobs, we must support entrepreneurs. Yet, policymakers continue to prioritize big, established businesses over new businesses. The result: Entrepreneurship has remained effectively flat for 20 years, in part because women, people of color, and rural residents lack equal access to the tools needed to start new businesses. The Kauffman Foundation has launched the Start Us Up Now, a coalition to back the new policy agenda, America's New Business Plan, to support America's entrepreneurs.

  • April 14, 2019 — John Bridgeland and WFYI CEO Lloyd Wright (pictured here) take a pilgrimage to Milan, Indiana, the town where the 1954 Milan High School basketball team with only 70 boys in the entire school won the Indiana State Basketball Championship that inspired the movie Hoosiers. Bridgeland and Wright have worked together on “American Graduate” — the public media’s initiative to boost high school graduation rates.  The TIME cover story, Dropout Nation, written as a result of Civic’s report The Silent Epidemic, featured a teenager on the cover of the magazine from Shelbyville, Indiana.  Shelbyville High School has since raised its high school graduation rate from 71 percent to 94 percent.  

  • April 2, 2019 — Founder and Executive Director of the College Excellence Program at the Aspen Institute, Josh Wyner, together with Northrup Grumman CEO Kathy Warden and George Mason University President Angel Cabrera, announced the winners of the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence at the Newseum today.  Indian River State College and Miami Dade College were the winners of the Aspen Prize and Odessa College, Palo Alto College and Pierce College Fort Steilacoom were the Rising Stars.  Civic CEO John Bridgeland was a Prize Jury Member on the committee that determined the 2019 Aspen Prize awards.​

  • March 30, 2019 — John Bridgeland attends the world premiere of Lera Auerbach’s Arctica, performed by the National Symphony Orchestra and commissioned by the National Geographic Society.  The production was inspired by National Geographic Explorer Enric Sala and his expedition to the Arctic Circle with Auerbach.  NY Times Columnist Tom Friedman moderated a panel discussion with Auerbach, Sala and Greenland Shaman Ole Jørgen Hammeken.  Sala has led the Pristine Seas Initiative at NGS.  Civic Policy Council members Sylvia Earle and Bob Nixon, as well as David Shaw, Barb Block, Sarah Nixon, Richard Pyle and Michael Conathan, are working on the Aspen High Seas Initiative to bring the national park idea to the ocean and make key stakeholders aware of the need to protect the High Seas.  Scientists estimate that 30-40 percent of the ocean needs to be protected to restore and maintain its health.

  • March 18, 2019 — Washington Post Columnist and Civic Policy Council Member Michael Gerson spoke to the board and guests of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting at Dumbarton House on Journalism and Civil Society.  Civic CEO John Bridgeland spoke earlier in the day at the CPB board meeting about American Graduate and the High School Dropout Challenge.  Eighty-nine percent of communities that are part of CPB’s American Graduate initiative have seen an average gain of 9.7 percentage points in high school graduation rates from 2011-17, compared to the national average of 5.5 percentage points.

  • April 22, 2018 -  John Bridgeland and Erin Ingram visit Monument Academy with inspirational founder, Ellen Bloomfield. Monument Academy is a DC public charter weekday boarding school starting in 5th grade enrolling vulnerable youth who are involved in the foster care system, have experienced homelessness or have other challenges. The school provides excellent academics, social and emotional well being, life skill, stability, and adult connection so that students graduated prepared for post-secondary learning, a career and independent living within the community. John and Erin visited with couples who live in the residential units full-time, serving as life-coaches, mentors, and allies for these young people, together with the Director of Student Life, teachers, and the young people themselves. Inspiring!

Bridgeland engages Chelsea Clinton in a discussion about national service and its relevance to the challenges America faces today. The group took a tour of Mount Vernon in the quiet of night and were reminded that Six-Star General George Washington saw national service as central to being an American and that he devoted more than 50 years of his life to serving the nation.

The campaign released State Report Cards on Student Homelessness to spur state and local leaders to embrace these children and youth and help them navigate their life circumstances towards a better future.   • June 6, 2017  -  John Bridgeland, Sylvia Earle, and David Shaw participate in the Ocean Elders dinner in New York City in connection with discussions on the Ocean and High Seas at the United Nations.  

  • May 23, 2017 -  In 2006, Civic Enterprises organized the International Conference on Faith and Service, bringing leaders from three Abrahamic faiths — Christianity, Judaism, and Islam — together in a discussion and agenda for action. Thanks to the Case Foundation, service projects among people of different faiths were organized in 42 hot spots around the world. After their service, people of different faiths came together to discuss what it was in their respective religious traditions —the Christian Beatitudes, the Jewish Tikkun Olam, and the Five Pillars of Islam — that inspired them to serve. We need to rescue that spirit back today, in a world that provides more sources of unity than division. 

  • May 6, 2017 -  John Bridgeland delivers the Commencement Address to 3,000 people and nearly 300 graduates at the coliseum at Averett University in Danville, Virginia. The inspirational Tiffany Franks, President of Averett, led the ceremonies and has helped mobilize nearly every college and university int he Commonwealth of Virginia to become part of the Service Year Alliance's efforts to institutionalize national service in higher education.   • September 12, 2015 -  John Bridgeland won the 2015 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor bestowed by the ITA. Former Wimbledon and U.S. Open Champion Stan Smith gave Bridgeland the award. Bridgeland spoke and challenged the ITA, Hall of Fame and USTA to create "Coach for America" to enable college graduates who played on the tennis team and are not going to turn pro to do a service year, bringing the benefits and love of tennis to youth in vulnerable communities. He envisions they would be called "Arthur Ashe Service Fellows", in memory of the great tennis champion who dedicated his life to serving others, particularly vulnerable children.

  • January 10, 2014 -  Mary Bruce of Civic Enterprises and David Shapiro of the National Mentoring Partnership with John Bridgeland, briefed the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, The Corporation for National and Community Service, and the Department of Education on findings from the soon-to-be-released report, "The Mentoring Effect: Young People's Perspectives on the Outcomes and Availability of Mentoring."  This report, to be released on Monday, January 13, is the first nationally representative survey of young adults on their experiences with mentoring, and provides promising paths forward that communities, states, and federal agencies can take in order to leverage the power of mentoring to keep young people on a healthy and productive path to adulthood.

  • November 5-6, 2013 -  John Bridgeland and Mary Bruce of Civic Enterprises co-convened with Robert Balfanz and Joanna Fox of the Everyone Graduates Center the Early Warning System Summit at the George W. Bush Institute in Dallas, TX.  The summit brought together nearly 100 of the top leaders in the nation who have adopted early warning information and intervention systems.  Teaching summits will occur in 2014 to make best practices more widely adopted, particularly in low-performing high schools and their feeder elementary and middle schools.

  • June 20, 2013 -  John Bridgeland and Alan Khazei, co-chairs of the Franklin Project at the Aspen Institute, released survey findings showing that a strong majority of registered voters support large-scale national service.  The findings, Voters for National Service: Perspectives of American Voters on Large-Scale National Service, were presented at the Points of Light 2013 National Conference on Volunteering and Service.  The findings were also discussed in a Politico op-ed.

  • May 24, 2013 -  John Bridgeland gave the Commencement Address at Johns Hopkins University - Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Science for both Master's and Doctoral degrees as well as several certificates in Advanced Academic programs.   • April 16, 2013 -  Civic Enterprises joins Attendance Works to recognize September as Attendance Awareness Month. The Count Us In! toolkit, released by Attendance Works last week, helps schools and communities plan for September activities. It details how everyone in the community- parents, faith leaders, housing authority workers, businesses, after-school programs, mayors and, of course, educators- can get involved. Attendance Works also released a new video on how chronic absence has become a crisis in our schools that can be used to educate and motivate your community to participate in planning and implementing activities for Attendance Awareness Month. 

  • April 15-19, 2013 -  American University's radio station WAMU 88.5 is airing its new series this week, Yesterdays Dropouts, at 6:50am and 8:50am, Monday through Friday. This five part series highlights the challenges still faced by a generation of adults who left high school many years ago without a diploma. The series will be rebroadcast by Metro Connection Friday at 1:00pm and Saturday at 7:00am.

  • February 25, 2013 -  The nation’s work to improve high school graduation rates took a significant leap forward according to a report released today by Civic Enterprises at the 4th Grad Nation Summit in Washington, D.C. The report, Building a Grad Nation, found that for the first time the U.S. is on track to meet the national Grad Nation goal of a 90 percent high school graduation rate by the class of 2020.

  • February 13, 2013 -  John Bridgeland kicked off the One Night, One EARTH gala at the Organization of American States, attended by nearly 300 guests, Ambassadors and Representatives from a dozen Latin American and African countries, four U.S. Senators and Members of Congress, and officials from U.S. AID and NASA.  EARTH University in Costa Rica is a four year rigorous undergraduate program in sustainable agriculture and natural resource management that draws students from throughout Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa.  Civic Enterprises' Fellow Lily Rubino spent six months organizing this event.

  • January 22, 2013 -  More than 60 leaders from the Millennial Generation gathered at Aspen to generate ideas for the Franklin Project, an effort chaired by General Stanley McChrystal and co-led by John Bridgeland, Alan Khazei and Harris Wofford to envision and create a civilian national service system on par with our military.

  • January 10, 2013 -  John Bridgleand and Melody Barnes call on Congress to invest in what works and to support bipartisan solutions to our nation's biggest challenges in their new Politico op-ed, "Lesson to Congress: Invest in What Works".

  • January 9, 2013 -  John Bridgeland, Alan Khazei, and Harris Wofford convened the Franklin Project policy council at The Aspen Institute, bringing together leading experts from around the country to begin to develop a civilian counterpart to military service.
